Hey y’all!
My name is Evalaurene Jean-Charles, educator first and co-founder and CEO of Black on Black Education second. I started this organization in 2020 while I was in college, right before the start of the pandemic with my father, Jamaal Thomas, commonly know (by no one expect me) as The Renaissance Futurist. We have since broken up (I fired him) because of creative differences but he remains an integral part of foundation of this organization and my best friend, over 45, that is also my Dad. There is so much more to our story, so much so we developed a documentary (that you should really watch!)
Now that I got the backstory out of the way (you will learn I really like to provide context), Welcome to the Newsletter!
This is a space for us to discuss the power, impact and importance of student voice and student centered practices to enhance school and classroom culture. We do that in three ways:
How we help?:
Lead the conversation: Through this newsletter (more posts found on our website), our social media presence, and the Black on Black Education Podcast (Listen on Spotify, or Apple Podcast), we lead the conversation on why we need to use student voice especially in communities of color to revolutionize education.

Provide Resources: Our goal is to ensure we support educators and leaders on their student-centered journey by providing resources that help cultivate a school and classroom culture of student empowerment.
I’m Just a Teacher/I’m Just a Kid Guided Journals: A guided journal set designed to help both teachers and students take a reflective journey to explore their relationship with education and their identity. With thoughtful prompts and exercises, this journal helps students and teachers of color find their voice, inspire change, and create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Student Action Board Curriculum: An elective course curriculum designed to support students in developing research-based student solutions to your schools more pressing challenges. Let’s talk (reply to this email) if you need a half-year elective course curriculum for your high school students to help enhance their confidence, leadership, and self-advocacy skills.
Teach: I’M WRITING A BOOK! Over the last couple of years I’ve been sitting on a book idea to help educators explore the powerful impact of student voice and student-centered practices by empowering the very voices I want to be seen and heard MY STUDENTS. I can’t wait to update you all on the writing process, getting your thoughts, and share the book as a teaching tool! You should expect to be ready to meet her in Feb 2025!
Black on Black Education was born out of a deeply desire to empower educators, and students in communities of color. Our focus now is to spread the word on the power of student voice pushing both educators, and school leaders to give students a seat at the table.
I’m so glad you are on this journey with me, I’m always here to help… Talk soon!
